Ask twenty people how they would define "Marketing" and nineteen of them will give you some sort of take about advertising and promotion.
Now that's an important part of the marketing mix, but it falls a long way short of covering the complex range of issues that are truly "Marketing".
Many have attempted a more complete definition:
Marketing is a social and managerial process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating, offering and exchanging products of value with others.
Marketing is the process by which an organisation relates creatively, productively, and profitably to the marketplace.
Marketing is the art of creating and satisfying customers at a profit.
Marketing is getting the right goods and services to the right people at the right places at the right time at the right price with the right communications and promotion.
This last definition gives rise to the "Five Ps" of marketing, sometimes shown as:
Every senior manager MUST obtain some understanding of marketing - both conceptually and pragmatically, if she or he is to really contribute to their organisation's success. And this is true for all sectors - private, public and not-for-profit.
